Hirsch, Maurice de

Hirsch, Maurice de
(1831-96)
   German financier and philanthropist. He was born in Munich, moved to Brussels in 1851, and later settled in Paris. In 1873 he made contributions to the Alliance Israelite Universelle to establish Jewish schools in Turkey, and in 1891 he set up the Jewish Colonization Association (ICA) to establish agricultural colonies in Argentina and elsewhere. He also founded the Hirsch Fund, the purpose of which was to open agricultural and crafts schools in Galicia, and the Baron de Hirsch Fund in New York for the technical and agricultural training of immigrants.
